Background

The Jose Luis Kortright Scholarship was established by Lydia, Ken, Monica, Frank, Jose, David, Larry, Denis, and Erik in honor of their husband and father. The foundation honors his passion for family, service, and commitment to the community. The Scholarship is need-based and helps support the financial need of student-athletes who would like to participate in athletic travel or after-school programming.

Applicants are selected through a process led by the Kortright family. Once awarded, the Scholarship will support the chosen applicant’s choice of athletic travel or after-school program participation fee. Student-athletes may apply annually as long as they uphold the standards of academic performance and community membership outlined by The Kortright Kares Foundation.

Criteria

The Scholarship recipients will be selected annually based on an application and essay submitted student athletes must meet the following criteria:

Consistent academic performance, “Always do your best”.
Proven team player who is engaged in school and athletics with a love of learning and positive can-do attitude.
Demonstrated financial need

The following are the three steps that applicants need to complete in order to apply for the scholarship:

Step 1: Fill out the Student & Parent Information section.

Step 2: Request two recommendation letters. One letter should come from an academic teacher (such as a math, history, science, foreign language, or English teacher), while the other should come from a teacher, advisor, coach, or mentor who can describe the applicant's engagement both inside and outside the classroom. Applicants should upload both reference letters.

Step 3: Write an essay that explains why they are qualified for the scholarship. The essay should focus on Mr. Kortright's dedication to a life of service, his positive attitude, and his commitment to community and family.

Applicants complete an essay articulating what qualifies them for the scholarship.

Think about how education and helping each other are important for growing personally and as a community. Mr. Kortright showed us how awesome it is to help others, stay positive, and love sports. Now, it's your turn to share a story about a time you had to make a big decision or faced a challenge at school or in your community. Tell us what you decided, what you did, and what happened as a result. We'd like to hear how your choice helped you and others, and how it shows the good things Mr. Kortright believed in, like helping out and staying positive. Also, think about what you learned from this experience about being part of your school or community, and how it might help you do more good things in the future.
